Seaford Silver Band was delighted to return to the Bishopstone May Fayre on Saturday 2 May—always a highlight of our year and a much-loved community event. Despite a rather gloomy forecast in the days leading up to it, the afternoon itself began exceptionally well, with blue skies and warm sunshine creating a relaxed and cheerful atmosphere
The Fayre was wonderfully busy, with people wandering between the stalls, gathering in groups on the grass and making the most of the fine weather. It was a pleasure to see such a strong turnout and to be part of such a lively and welcoming occasion.
We performed two 45-minute sets during the afternoon, with a welcome break in between. Our thanks go to the organisers and volunteers who looked after us so well—and especially for the tea and delicious cake, which was very much appreciated by the band.
Our programme featured a varied selection of music, including traditional brass band pieces, well-known film themes, popular songs and a few lighter numbers to keep things fun. It was lovely to see the audience responding to the mix, with plenty of smiles, toe-tapping and applause.
We wish to thank Karen and Marian (tenor horns), who kindly joined us for the afternoon as guest players—their support was very much appreciated.
There were some particularly enjoyable musical moments during the performance. It delighted one and all when Hubert, our conductor, invited four-year-old Joshua (grandson of Liz on flugelhorn) to take the baton and conduct one of the pieces! Chris’s cornet solo Tammy was beautifully played and warmly received, and James’s fantastic rendition of Nellie the Elephant on the E♭ bass brought a lighter touch to the second half.
The weather, however, had the final say. Halfway through our second set, just as we began to play Hello Dolly, the skies suddenly changed and it began to rain. With the heavens threatening to open, and hearing distant rumbles of thunder, we made the decision to cut the programme slightly short. We brought things to a close with Sussex by the Sea, played by popular request, before making a swift dash back to our cars as the rain became heavier.
Our sincere thanks go to the organisers of the Bishopstone May Fayre for inviting us to play. It is always a privilege to be part of such a special event, and we had a fantastic time.
The day left us with terrific memories—a magical and timeless celebration of the wonderful place and community in which we live. We very much look forward to returning again in the future.
